Dr. Jan F. Miller
Dr. Jan F. Miller, Au.D., FAAA, CCC-A
"In college, I performed research on why adults and children have difficulty understanding speech and language. Audiology has allowed me to continue working with auditory system problems, by helping people hear again through the use of advanced hearing aid technology and caring, expert counseling."
Jan is an audiologist of distinction with more than 40 years' experience serving hearing impaired individuals. Jan received her Doctorate in Clinical Audiology from the University of Florida at Gainesville, her Masters Degree in Audiology from Columbia University in New York, and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology and Psycholinguistics from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. She was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in college.
Jan has published research on the influence of acoustic pattern on speech perception. She holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHLA), is a Fellow of both the American Academy of Audiology (FAAA) and the American Academy of Dispensing Audiologists (FADA). She is licensed in Audiology and holds registration as a Hearing Aid Dispenser in New York State.
Prior to entering private practice over 28 years ago, Jan worked as a Clinical Audiologist at the Hearing and Speech Center of Long Island Jewish-Hillside Medical Center for 13 years. Earlier, she worked in specialty clinical and hospital settings including Queens Hospital Center and the Rockland County Center for the Physically Handicapped. She currently serves as an Audiology Consultant at many senior assisted living residences in Nassau County.
Jan is an expert in advanced technology hearing aid fitting, counseling and follow-up care, ensuring better patient success with amplification. She has given aural rehabilitation courses (lip-reading and auditory training) in both of our offices, as well as at adult education centers and community groups. Jan is a frequent speaker at local community organizations, libraries, and senior citizen clubs where she enjoys teaching the importance of hearing healthcare to local residents.
Her most rewarding professional experience was treating a four-year-old girl with what appeared to be a severe speech and language problem. "Our office diagnostic tests revealed that she had an undiagnosed 70% hearing loss", Jan explained. Through ongoing testing, hearing aid fitting, and aural rehabilitation training at our office, that little girl went on to graduate from a top university and has earned a graduate degree in Psychology.
To stay current with changing technology, Jan frequently attends continuing education courses through her professional organizations. In fact, she has won the prestigious "ACE Award" for Continuing Education 9 times and was named an "Academic Scholar" by the American Academy of Audiology.
Jan is a member of many prestigious professional organizations such as the American Academy of Audiology; the Academy of Doctors of Audiology; the American, New York State, and Long Island Speech-Language-Hearing Associations, to name just a few. Jan is a native of Brooklyn but has lived on Long Island for many years.
